COVID-19 Megathread

"
I suppose it was inevitable that some branch of this thread would concern personal illnesses and chronic conditions. I mean, gamers with less-than-peak bodies! WHO KNEW!

And it's about as good a lens on how Covid-19 affects us as any. I still envy those who aren't afraid of it, whether because they've already had it and gotten over it, or they're part of the populace for whom symptoms are almost certainly going to be fairly mild. That must be awesome. On the other hand, we now know that perfectly healthy people can also be stricken down, so perhaps...everyone should be somewhat afraid? I don't know. I can only work with my perspective, which is extreme wariness.

As I said before, we're closing in on a month lockdown here. What this means is even given Covid-19's stealthy nature, the GF is finally accepting that she isn't a carrier despite having gone out and done some shopping after my own 'yep not going out there' restriction. Which is nice. I knew she wasn't but it's important that she knows it too. No one wants to feel like they should be anathema to their own partner.

So this is sad news: restaurant workers are starting to die, despite only doing delivery services. I imagine this is due to a lingering cash-on-delivery culture. I would be surprised if restaurant food delivery remains a thing for much longer.

I'm way more afraid of destroying economy and those hospitals close, food empty shelves in the supermarket, food deliveries stop as you note, etc.

Again, as I have noted since the beginning, as soon as you drop the constraints the former geometric spike is still going to occur.

We are destroying our economy for no purpose as we are not evading the outcome that we are pretty-much all going to get this virus, like it or not.

Okay, that was awesome! 😂
Getting through this pandemic will require leaders of countries to help ALL of their citizens. Even the ones who don't worship them. #DontBeASpreader #InScienceWeTrust Remember the term: #NegligentHomicide

So, the solution is to get everyone sick all at the same time and overwhelm the healthcare system causing the sickness and deaths of all of the nurses and doctors?

They already are exposed now since most hospitals have CV19 patients and probably overwhelmed too - especially in places like NYC. Doesn't change the fact HC won't even be there with no economy. Go watch threads 1984 movie post nuclear strike to get a glimpse of what's coming.

Many places are already overloaded. If restrictions are lifted and people are forced back into danger, There will be nothing remaining. Genocide isn't the answer. Listen to the scientists and experts and get over yourself.

But related to that, my Tokyo-based friend with whom I play some D3 every 3-4 days (one of the small pluses of Covid-19 is he's working 13-14 gruelling hours a day at home instead of at work) told me today he decided to take a break from home cooking and grabbed a burger at BK. It was a Whopper. With a hash brown on it. And tangy BBQ sauce. And mayonnaise.

Dude, I felt like a priest listening to an old friend talk about how awesome casual sex is. I swear I was salivating into the microphone.

What? They're having IRL times in Japan? Hopefully they can continue doing whatever it is they're doing there!

The experts think they can print money out of this. Yes You can print money but not stuff. Already, in only two weeks, tons of stuff I used to buy is no longer in the supermarket. Over buying? No not what I eat fresh vegetable/fruit mostly. it's we live in a complicated society with trillions of moving parts and one link breaks in chain food will not come. They just shut down coal mines in Virginia guess energy is not an essential service anymore? We are breaking millions of chain links.

HC exerts like Fauci advice is always going to call for more medical solutions for the same reason a general is always going to ask for more men and ammo but they do not consider third fouth and fith order effects of their actions. Great Depression will be worse than if you injected everyone with virus tomorrow.

The great depression will be 10X worse if nothing is done to flatten the curve. That is fact.

Well, for now Japan is still IRLing it up. It seems they still aren't taking it that seriously yet. But who can blame them? They haven't been told otherwise. I dunno. The mere fact that my friend is working from home is kind of progressive for Japan. They're obviously forced to do it but if there's one place in the world where you simply never want to be home, it's Japan. They have an infamous long-standing issue with cramped housing, and typically 'home' is somewhere to sleep, eat, and decompress after a very long day at work, socialising, shopping, whatever.

And something else my friend brought up: the commute is significant. Not so much the stress of it or the crowd, but the fact that the commute from home to work, work to home, signifies a change of gears. I thought back to when I'd catch a bus and then train to school, and I had to agree. It was a nice time to switch from home-mode to school-mode. To play a game. Read a bit. Maybe meet up with a friend. Remove that and you've got this weird situation where you have to go from home-mode to work-mode by doing nothing more than turning on the computer. Shit, you don't even need to get dressed really.

People in Japan retire with great difficulty. They just don't know what to do with themselves. There's a reason 'the old man drinking in the park' is such a cliché there. So Covid-19 is giving the young salarymen a taste of that...without the freedom to go drink in the park.
